A person that has both a mental health disorder and a substance use disorder is referred to as having a co-occurring disorder (also sometimes referred to as dual diagnosis). Co-occurring disorders are notoriously hard to treat and manage, as when one disorder flares up, it often sets off the other, so keeping them in balance requires comprehensive care and attention.
